Why choose scent work?

Scent work offers so many benefits for both you and your dog.

  • It taps into your dog’s natural instincts and allows them to use their nose as it was designed

  • It gives powerful mental stimulation that can help calm an excitable or anxious dog

  • It builds trust and improves your communication together

  • It’s ideal for reactive dogs as the work is done independently and safely

  • All breeds, sizes and ages can enjoy scent work

Using their nose gives dogs a sense of purpose. It helps them relax, focus and gain confidence — which often carries over into other areas of life.

How do you get into scent work?

When done well, scent work is a game that’s rewarding for both of you.

A simple way to start is:

  1. Introduce a specific scent, such as an essential oil on a cotton swab, in a quiet space

  2. Let your dog search for it and reward them as soon as they find it

  3. Use whatever motivates your dog most — food, toys, play or praise

  4. Gradually make the searches more challenging

  5. Keep it fun and end on success

If you’d like guidance and structure, take a look at my

scent detection courses. DM Dog Training is City & Guilds accredited in scent work handling and instructing, so you’ll be learning from qualified professionals.

Prefer a more personal approach? I also offer 1-1 sessions tailored to you and your dog.

My dog is older — can I do it?

Absolutely. Nearly all dogs can take part in scent work.

We use their natural behaviours and create a fun, pressure-free environment to work in. Fitness level or age doesn’t matter — the activity can be adapted to suit each dog.

If your dog has any health issues, just check in with me first and I’ll help you adjust the sessions safely.

I want to compete

Whether you’re interested in learning for fun or aiming for competitions, we can help you reach your goals.

At DM Dog Training we:

  • Build strong foundations through structured training levels

  • Cover skills like search techniques and handling

  • Offer opportunities to take part in a nationwide competition with other scent enthusiasts

Whatever direction you want to take, we’ll help you progress at your own pace.

At what age can I do scent work?

You can start once your puppy has had their initial vaccination. Early exposure helps them develop confidence and problem-solving skills. There’s no upper limit — scent work is suitable for every age and stage.

My dog’s rubbish at sniffing

No dog is bad at sniffing. They might just not understand the task yet or lack motivation.

Each dog learns differently. Scent work can be adapted to match their pace, building their confidence step by step until they’re eager to search.

My dog is not food motivated

Not all dogs work for food and that’s fine. We can use whatever your dog finds rewarding — toys, play or praise.

If your dog loves to tug, a good toy can make all the difference. I recommend Tug-E-Nuff toys, and you’ll get a discount when you shop using my link.

I have been told scent work isn’t good

Dogs experience the world through their nose. Their sense of smell is over 10,000 times stronger than ours, which makes scent work a natural and fulfilling activity.

No matter what other training or sports you do, scent is always involved in some way. When approached positively, scent work can support every area of your dog’s training and confidence.
